How to Really get better after Ankle Surgery

Posted by Tom Schwab

getting really better after ankle surgeryWhen you have ankle surgery, you are in for a long recovery.  You will need to do many things including attend physical therapy sessions, listen to your doctor’s orders, and plenty of other things.  But you might wonder how you can really get better after you ankle surgery.  Here are a few things that can help you heal faster.

1. Prepare

One of the best things you can do, assuming you know you will have your ankle surgery a bit in advance, is to prepare yourself in every way possible.  That might mean setting up help before the big day, cooking some meals for the freezer, and getting your house ready for your recovery.  You can also do things like look into alternatives to crutches so you can get around better and further your recovery.  Goodbye Crutches has three options for you to consider: the Hands Free Crutch, the Knee Walker, and the Seated Scooter.  All can be purchased or rented and delivered for free directly to your door.

2. Live Offensively

Before and even after your surgery, you need to live offensively instead of defensively.  Instead of simply reacting to things that happen to you, be more proactive about your recovery. Instead of responding to what happens, try to work ahead and prioritize your life. You will be moving slower so it will be harder for you to do many things.  Since you know that, set up an order to things so you can still get everything done on a day when you really need those things done.

3. Eat Healthfully

You know that in order to live a healthy lifestyle, you need to eat a healthy diet, but you may not realize that healthy eating can have a huge impact on your recovery after surgery.  When you have ankle surgery, your body will be trying to heal itself. In order for it to do so, it will need to have plenty of nutrients.  Drink plenty of water and lay off the sugary drunks.  Eat fruits and vegetables first and try to keep the fatty snacks at bay when possible.  You will find that you will feel better throughout your recovery and heal faster with the right diet.

4. Stay Active

Though your mobility will be rather limited, there are still things you can do to stay active.  You, of course, will need to rest more than usual, but that does not mean you should sit on the couch all day everyday.  Make sure you get up and move every few hours and do the physical therapy exercises your doctor has prescribed.  Stretch when you are sitting down and when your kids are playing outside, move a lawn chair to a good location and watch. You can rest doing a number of things besides watching TV that will make you feel more active and better while allowing you the rest you need.

5. Take Help

It might be hard for you to accept help from others.  After all, you are likely used to doing everything yourself.  But when people offer help to you when you are recovering, accept it with a grateful heart.  Not only will that help take a lot off your plate, but you will get better faster if you are less stressed.

Recovering from ankle surgery will certainly not be an easy task, but if you take your recovery one day at a time and stay aware of how you are feeling, you will get through it and be able to put the entire ordeal behind you.
